A Blah Week

This week has been pretty blah-y. We had a nice dinner with the family on Tuesday but PR Dad has had some pretty bad back pain lately so he has been to the doctor a few time, and then American Idol did not record!!!, The Phi is still having issues sleeping, I had a nice menegitits episode on Wednesday and Thursday, and then to top it off my cell phone met its demise by The Phi and a cup of water. So if you call me and all you hear is gurgling, its just my phone drowning in H2O. If anyone really needs me, you going to have to call PR Dad. After calling my cell phone company (Nextel) they informed me that despite me paying $4 a month for almost 2 years for insurance it would still cost me $100 for a replacement phone. Then I asked if I could switch my phone plan to the minimum and keep PR Dads the same so I can move to a new company. They informed me that any change to my plan would renew my contract with Nextel for 2 more years. So my options are to either pay $100 for a new phone that I will use until June and cannot be used with a different provider, or pay for a 1000 minute plan for 2 months for a phone that won't even turn on. Looks like Nextel has no problems screwing their customer. We have been loyal customers with them for 2 years and despite the crappy reception we have stuck it out. And this is how they repay us. Damn them. So we are looking for a new cell phone company. Any suggestions??

A strange angle from the Super Chevy Car Show

Chevys and Doggie Nightmares

So me and my ran over foot (I am so not letting this go) had a really good weekend. Got a lot of house work done. We had a visit and dinner with Matty and Sammy the Bull on Saturday night. That night was tough. The Phi has decided that she never wants to sleep at night ever again. Every night we put her to bed and she screams her head off. Sometimes for over an hour. It is awful and it is driving me insane. I dread bedtime. I sat in her room for like an hour so she wouldn't scream. Then when I finally get into bed Roo (PR dog) wakes up about 4am crying like he was in a lot of pain. Just completely freaking out! PR Dad turns on the light and I am trying to calm the dog down and hold his mouth shut so he doesn't wake up Screaming Beauty in the other room. He finally stopped yelping and he put his head under my arm and left it there for awhile. I checked him out to see if he was hurt and he wasn't. The only thing we could think of is that he had a nightmare. Do dogs dream?

Then on Sunday morning we headed out with Sammy the Bull. Our first stop was the Swap Meet. In a couple of months PR Dad and I are going to be adding Punk Rock Godparents to our resumes. We are baptizing Lili and I was so excited to buy her dress. I knew that I had to have a Virgen de Guadalupe on it. And the Swap Meet is the best place to find these silky frilly lacy, Virgen embroidered dresses. I found a beautiful one in her size and I can't wait to see her in it! Now we just need to figure out what we are going to do with her wild hair. PR Dad has suggested a faux-hawk. After the swap meet we grabbed a quick breakfast and then on to the main event. The Super Chevy Car Show! It was at the speedway and Sammy the Bull (who is a mechanic and L-O-V-E-S Chevy's) was super excited. We had a great time. We spent hours wandering the aisles and checking out a lot of really cool, show cars. Man those '64 Maibu's are so freakin' awesome. I would love to have one of those all decked out. We all had a good time but man it was hot! We stopped for ice cream on the way home and The Phi had her first cup of Coldstones (sorbet of course, no eggs for Phi), a quick Target trip for a new shower curtain (R.I.P Loteria shower curtain) and then we were home. But the fun did not stop there. My sister Elaine and Mickey stopped by to pick up her drum set that she finally sold.

Helping in the front lawn

So we have decided to tackle a very small landscaping project. Today we were out shoveling dirt and pulling up plants. The Phi helped.

Dusting off the Chucks

Well PR Dad and I dusted off our Chuck Taylors for the first Punk Rock show in years! PR Dads BFF Mattafact and his band My 2 Dads had their first show last night. Grandma Kim came by and took care of The Phi for us. It was at a cool bar and we had a blast. I have been watching Matt play in shows for over 4 years and this was the first time I saw him as the lead and it was the best show he has ever done! The band sounded good and Matt's voice sounded good. The $2 well drinks helped us have a lot of fun. Well me, poor PR Dad was driving and could not partake in the drinking!

Mattafact rubbing the goatee for good luck before the show

It's official. My2Dads is back.

This is what PR Parents look like.

Pr Dad and Sammy the Bull enjoying the show.

This is how cool guys congratulate each other.
Seriously though I cannot say enough how great the show was! If you get a chance to see them live do not hesitate and go!

Making good on a promise.

If you have ever met my Dad you know what a cool guy he is. Well recently went on a pretty amazing adventure. See I my cousin Roman has MDS. A while back my Uncle (Roman's Dad) made a promise to a saint. He promised that if this saint allowed my cousin to live to be 19 years old he would make a pilgrimage to Mexico to Talpa and make the 100 mile journey on foot as a thank you. We call this a "manda". Well my Dad is Roman's god-father and now that my cousin is 20 years old it was time to make good on the promise he went with my uncle. They walked over 100 miles for days. Here is a recap from my Dad.

We started on Saturday March 10Th at 5:00 AM. stop for lunch at 11:00 AM and did not stop until we got to the town of Tonaya, man were my legs sore.A friend of Nicho's welcome us to stay at his Mom's house for the night. After some tortas and tequila, that was made in that town we went to sleep. At 3:00 AM we left the next morning with a horse that was lent to Nicho, there was five of us making the trip and a guide that drove the truck and kept ahead of us with our sleeping bags and other items that we were using on our trip. The second day was more of the same lots of mountains, creeks to cross, small towns to see and people walking to Talpa. We stop to sleep in the town of Los Pinuelos were a man let us stay in his horse stables, that night was very cold. The next morning we got up at 6:00 AM, late start, we started out by walking the horses up a very steep mountain that took us about one hour to get to the top of the mountain were we mounted the horses and rode through the most beautiful valley with rolling hills and pine trees. That night we camp out at Tierras Blancas, which is a mountain range in Jalisco. We left the camp site at 3:00 Am the next morning walking and riding the horses. The horse I was riding was all cut up from this hoofs and very exhausted and could not continue, we left him in the town of Ayutla, with a friend of Nichos. We switch off walking ever two hours now that we had one less horse. we arrived at Talpa that evening around 8:00 PM, found a place for the horses to stay, then we continue to the church where we gave thanks to the virgin of Talpa for taking care of us on the road and making it safely to Talpa. We got two rooms in town took our first shower since we left Ciudad Guzman, your tio and the guide and I went out for some beer then went back to the room for a rest and sleep well deserved. Next morning we went to church then to breakfast some shopping. That afternoon we got the horses and took them to the area were they were loaded onto a truck and taken home back to Ciudad Guzman. The horse that we left behind is doing fine and will be brought home on the 24th of this month. We all had a good time one of the best experiences of my life

A Pain in the foot

Guess what my wonderful husband did today? Apparently he does not know how to drive a stick very well because as I was getting The Phi into her car seat, he started the XB, but stalled it. The car jerked forward right over my foot. Yes people he ran over my foot. Not just run over but it stopped right on top of my foot. In between my yelling and his laughing he had to restart the car and move it back. No worries my foot is a bit sore but thats about it. All I'm saying is he better sleep with one eye open tonite.

Where the kisses are hers and hers and his....

So on Sunday The Phi and I spent the day at home cleaning house. Well I was cleaning house and The Phi was dirtying house. We had a nice visit from Uncle Sam and even had more people come look at the house. While, scrubbing, washing, vaccuming etc. I had the TV on to TV Land. Apparently the groovy show Three's Company is having its 30th anniversay. Why to remind me about my 30th this year. Thanks TV Land, for throwing that in my face. Anyways, they were playing a 24 hour marathon and I left it on most of the day. I cannot even begin to explain my love for this show as a child. I could not get enough of Jack Tripper, Chrissy and Janet. As I watched the a few minutes of episodes I realized that this show taught the young and impressionable 5- year old PR Mom alot of life, more specifically sexuality. This is where I learned what a gay man was, and what sex was. Mr. Roper and his little twinkly finger wave when talking about Jack and his gayness. And Mrs. Roper doing everything she can to get her husband into bed. Jack constantly groping the girls and trying to get them into bed. Larry and his slick lines and big hair trying to be the player of the year. It was such a great show. A show simply about 3 roommates, their friends, and their landlords. Sipping beers at the Regal Beagle and encompassing everything 70's and 80's. Before everyone protested everything and being "PC" was not the norm. The clothes, the hair, the glasses, and the slang. I loved the camping episode with Jack falling out of the hammock over and over again. Or the one with the pie contest, where Chrissy ate Jack's entry. it ended with pies being thrown at everyone. Classic.

So Happy 30th Anniversary Three's Company. I am honored to be established the same year as one of the greatest shows off all time!!

Trendytadpole.com

My parents did not have tattoos when I was growing up. My Dad waited until is was 50 years old to get his first one. Tattoos were foreign and almost taboo in my childhood house. I got my first on my 20th birthday. It wasn't a rebellion thing, just more of a freezing a moment of my life in time. Punk Rock Dad has 5 tattoos over his chest, arm and back. He has two stars and a sacred heart on his chest. I have a sun on my leg and an "R" on my back. We have turned our tattoos into learning props for The Phi. She has learned shaped from PR Dad's tattoos and the letter "R" from mine. It will be a normal part of her everyday. Of course a 22 month old is way too young to get her first tattoo but over at Trendytadpole.com we can get the next best thing! For sizes as small as 3 months and as big as 6 years, your kid can proudly display his love for their Mommy in tattoo form. The design comes in onesie and t-shirt sizes and is a variety of colors. These 3/4 sleeve baseball style shirt is perfect for my hard-core Punk Rock kid. How cool is she going to be on the playground in this shirt . I love finding new places to buy unique and super cool stuff for The Phi and http://www.trendytadpole.com/ is a new favorite.

Happy Feet? More like racist feet.

How did this get past me? How did I never hear about this? Yesterday we put in Happy Feet for The Phi to watch. She was not interested and we left it playing. I was not really watching until a voice that sounded very much like Scarface started talking. I immediately recognized Robin Williams as this voice. The more I watched the more my jaw dropped on the floor. They had incorporated every racist stereo-type of Latino into this character and the characters that lived in the, what i can only describe, as the "ghetto" part of the Arctic. There was bad accents throwing around words like "Mami" and " homies". They were passionate Latin lovers. I wish I could tell you more, but I stopped watching. Tell me that I missed the uproar in the Latino community that this movie made. Or was it simply ignored because it was a cartoon. I think that its a cartoon makes it worse. This is what we are teaching little kids.

A long overdue visit.

Part of our super awesome weekend with my Mom was a visit to my Nana and Tata. Big Nana and Big Tata to The Phi!

Kicking it old school.

Big Tata being attacked by small people!

Lots of love for Big Nana!

Yarn is the New Crack

PR Dad said the other day that yarn was like my crack. He also claims that craft stores make him sleepy. He claims its the lighting. And this is from a man who suffers from insomnia. Go figure. But I really do love yarn. So much that I am looking forward to Bass Lake to see if the Yarn Barn is still there. Sad i know, but I really love knitting and crocheting. I know, its not very punk rock, but I cannot help myself. And the other day I found out that my buddy Angela also has a secret. She knits and is taking a sewing class! (Guess its not a secret anymore!) And I was so happy to have a friend (and one that I consider "cool") to share knitting stories and patterns with. The other day PR Dad was watching a dating show. It was about a dating coach following this girl around on dates and giving her advice. The guy asked the girl if she had any hobbies and she says "Yes, I knit, and I bring it with me everywhere!" She them brought out a ball of yarn and needles from her bag. The dating coach was floored and instructed this girl to never ever do that again. It was a deal breaker. I cannot figure out a way to make knitting and crocheting cool. Maybe some needles with flames and a skull knob on top. Should we have knitting circles where we listen to punk music really loud. Or maybe it needs a cooler hipper name like, extreme fabric modification. I don't want to love it has much as I do, and I don't it to take up as much free time as it does, but I really do enjoy it!

UCS-Phi

The Phi at my Alma mater. We stopped by campus to pick up a new licence plate holder. Finally have a cool car to display proudly "UCSB Alumni"

Watching Time Slip Away

I actually saw myself lose an hour on Sunday morning. After a mini-movie marathon with my Mom, sisters, nieces, nephews, The Phi, and Luis I crawled into bed about 1:57 am. I got into the covers and got comfy and looked at the time on my cell phone. It read 1:59 pm, then all of a sudden it was 2:59 pm was a few seconds and then it was 3 am. An entire hour of my life gone. Well gone for now until this fall when I will reclaim my 60 minutes.

Feast One Hundred and Thirty Four
Appetizer
What is your usual bedtime? Do you like that, or would you rather it be different?
I usually get into bed about 10:30 or 11pm. I wish it was much earlier than that. That way I could get a good 9 hours of sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and not so freakin tired every single day.
Soup
When it comes to advice, do you give more or receive more?
I would say that it would be about equal with possibly a little more receiving these days. In all matters of life and love I seek advice from the all knowing Boo. But I also dish out my share of advice to her. I rely (way too much) on my sister and my bong fong fong Jessica for parenting advice, but J-Dub does come to me sometimes. But lately I have been relying on all you fine people for advice so I guess that moves me over to the receiving end.
Salad
Describe a memorable meal you've had.
I spent a summer in Mexico while in community college. We stayed with a host family and ours was a little old lady, her son, grandson, and 14 year old maid. The old lady would feed us breakfast every morning and I can vividly remember the small kitchen, the table with the plastic tablecloth, and the greasy eggs drenched with freshly made salsa. Out of everything we did that summer, that is still one of my most vivid memories.
Main Course
Name a work of fiction that affected the way you think about something.
Hmm. I have read a lot of books but I would have to say Rain of Gold by Victor Villasenor really left a lasting impression on me. I made me feel even more pride in my family and the journey that we have taken together.
Dessert
What is your favorite type of fruit juice?
I have a love for the cranberry juice. Nice, cold, tart and taste great mixed with vodka!

Devil in disguise

In the last week, my beautiful little angel child has become possessed and has turned into a devil child. We are about 2 months away from 2 and she has jumped onto the fast track to the terrible twos. Any little thing will set her off into a full on flip-out, throw myself on the floor, screaming, crying, I don't care where we are, I don't care who is watching, lasting for 20 minutes, melt downs. She does this at home, in the car, at the office, in a store, at a restaurant. Yesterday when we got to the office she cried for 20 minutes because she wanted a book that was in the car. Never mind the box of books, toys and videos she already has in the office. It is unbelievable frustrating! I can't figure out the best way to deal with her temper tantrums. I have a feeling that she is getting smarter and she is testing me and PR Dad to see how far she has to go to get what she wants. I can hold out and let her cry for 20 minutes and not give in. PR Dad is a completely different story. And it is laying the foundation for a household just like the one I grew up in. Where Mom was the mean and nasty one who always said No. (No worries Mom I totally understand now!) And Dad was the "Yes Man". Which means that PR Dad will always deal with a happy spoiled child, while I will have to deal with a bratty spoiled brat. We have talked about this before and we don't want The Phi growing up a spoiled kid, who gets everything she wants or who throws a fit when they don't. What is the best way to do this??? Help me out people. I want my little angel back!

Look what I can do!

It took me about a month to complete, but here is a blanket that I made for The Phi. I call it my Neapolitan Blanket. I am so proud of this blanket! A few weeks ago I started a blog to show off my (and others) craft work. You can check it out Knitter Please !

Welcome to the Family

Thanks for the suggestions of the names of the new fish. But once I read my Mom's I knew we had a winner! Let me intoduce to the blog world, Cheech and Chong!

Its not on purpose I swear!

I have this strange thing where I dress The Phi and I in the same outfit. Now not exactly the same, but we dress alike. For example if we are going to be driving for a long time I have a tendency to dress us in warm-up like outfits. We both have the pink yoga pants with pink jacket. Yesterday was cold outside and we both wore dark jeans with a sweatshirt. Today we are both in khaki pants and polo shirts. I do not do this on purpose. I don't think, "how cute we would be to dress alike" Sometimes I don't even know that I do it until someone else points it out to me. "Oh, you guys are matching!" I also tend to dress The Phi in boy clothes. I think her wardrobe is about 50% girl clothes and 50% boy clothes now! When PR Dad and I shop for her we look in both sections. Boys always have the cooler shirts! I also try to stay away from pink stuff for her also. It is my childhood of puffy dresses, braids, shiny shoes and tights that makes me stay far far away from those things for The Phi. One day she will rebel and will only wear hoop skirts, tights and Mary Jane shoes. She will insist on matching ribbons in her hair and she will carry a lacy purse. All in pink of course.

What the F is happening to me?

Me, now.  So when I started this blog about 20 years ago it was a way to share my journey becoming a parent. I now have a 20 year old headin...
