NickMom reminds me of The Pre-Kid Era

I was recently getting my parenting humor fix over at NickMom.com and a silly comic got me thinking. See Joey and I are going to be celebrating 10 years together soon. Out of those 10 years we had a good 1.5 years without kids. That may not seem like a very long time, and let me preface this with a I LOVE MY KIDS MORE THAN ANYTHING, BUT there are certain times when I reminisce about how easy and different things were before we had our 2 little punks.

Here we are before we had the girls....

We are wide-eyed, probably because we are so well-rested. I don't think my smile could get any bigger. And look we both have NO grey hair! When I look at pictures and remember this time in our lives I think about how different things were then.

  • We could jump in the car at 11 pm and go grab an ice cream cone.
  • We could leave the house with no notice.
  • We never had to schedule anything around a nap time.
  • I could leave the house with just my keys, drivers license and a debit card.
  • Laundry could be done in just a couple of hours.
  • Drinking. At Bars. At Night.
  • The backseat of our car was clean.

But there is one thing that I really miss, and I really look forward to enjoying again after the kids are in college and out of the house. (Mom and Pops you can stop reading now)

Making noise during sex.

Every since Phi was born over 8 years ago, our sex life went from loud and rambunctious to a freakin' mime act. I can only imagine how ridiculous it must look. It's like a naughty movie on mute. And I can never fully pay attention to what's going on. One eye is always checking the door. My kids are not super light sleepers, but the older ones tends to stay up late, I never know when she will actually fall asleep. The little one tends to get out of bed once at night, and she is little with ninja-like skills so I never hear her until she is standing next to my bed and says something. I fear the day when we are in the middle of the hibbity-bibbity and I look over to see this....

That ish can scar a kid for life.

So we have at minimum, 15 more years of "silent sexy time". But the day that Louie leaves for college it is on like donkey kong and we will be turning the volume up to an 11!

  1. Great post. It sure brought back tons of memories. We had 4 years w/o kids! We'd hop in the car and just drive on the weekends. Our kids complained about the banging headboard! We finally added on and moved to the opposite end of the house.

    1. Haha! Jan!!! In a few years, when the kids no longer need a playroom I am sure Joey and I will happily move to the other end of the house!

So true! You had me laughing out loud because Janelle has ninja like skills as well and as walked in on us. I opened my eyes and there she was! Good thing it was really dark because she didn't see us... I have never jumped out of my bed faster lol

  3. As much as I want to have a kid (like now) reading this really makes me step back and appreciate this time Kelly and I have had just the two of us. Yesterday we decided to pack a lunch, throw the dogs in the back seat, and drive up the California coast. It was spontaneous and such a great day. We are currently living in the "good ol' days" and I need to remember to not take it for granted.

    1. Enjoy your freedom now. Kids are really not that much of a burden. You know we don't hesitate to throw the girls in the car and explore new places, but its still different. Plus you have like the most radical nieces and nephew in the world.

    2. OMG I'm so glad that mine isn't the only sex life that went from awesomely loud to a mime act. I'm DYING laughing. It's so true and I never though to describe it that way. I don't understand the parents who have their kids sleep in the same bed, that whole "Family bed" thing? I'd DIE. I. WOULD. DIE. Sex isn't as satisfying on the sofa or the bathroom counter. It's fun sometimes, but for a good, long sesh, I'm gonna need my mattress thankyouverymuch. I love your voice - you have great style! #client

    3. I was just talking about this today! I don't think my kids ever slept in bed with us at night. Even as newborns.

  4. And this is why we have sex at 3am. We used to get by with leaving the kids in the living room with a bowls of goldfish crackers and a movie. Now, they're old enough to know what we're doing and its SUCH a lady boner killer. Your girls are still small and don't have a real idea of what's going on. Mine do. And its gross.

    1. I am very familiar with the 3am sessions! When Phi was little, a snack and movie could give us at least 30 minutes, but now Phi is older and gives us the side-eye if we close our door. Louie will automatically started yelling, knocking, and/or kicking the door if its even half-way closed. Now a days we get a very loud "EWWWW" from both kids when we kiss, I can imagine what it will be like when they figure out the rest.
