On Sandy Hook Elementary

As the news started coming out about what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary I could not even begin to wrap my head around it. My heart is broken and I am so upset and so very sad. Every parent, or really any person who has a child in their lives put themselves in the shoes of the parents of Sandy Hook Elementary students. And I became terrified. Shaking with the fear that this happened, in this country. In a school. Every day I drop my daughter off at her school. I kiss her face and head to work and go about my day. I leave my daughter, my heart, 4 miles away from me, 6 miles away from her Father. The idea that there are people out walking the world capable of shooting kindergartners sickens me. It scares me and makes me want to grab my children and never ever let them leave the house. Because there was nothing that those parents could have done. They could not protect their innocent children. As a parent nothing scares me more. The idea that there are  people that for whatever reason takes the lives of innocent people in such a horrible way.

I had been watching the news constantly yesterday. Then, because he knew that I was desperate to see my kids, Joey brought the girls to my office. As soon as the door opened I turned off the news. Phi walked in excited about her day. She walked in with a birthday hat on her head because they had celebrated her teachers birthday. She had no idea what had happened on the other side of the country. In a school so much like her own. Joey and I had decided that if we could we were going to keep the news from Phi. We just couldn't figure out how to even approach the subject without leaving her scared to go to school.

I don't know what the answer is. I don't know what has to happen to make sure something like this never ever happens again.

This is the heartbreaking reality of our society. It is a harsh reality. And, a scary society.

A place where mental illness goes untreated for many reasons, where anyone can get their hands on a gun, or guns without following laws (in this case the guns were in the home and accessible).

We have gone from a society horrified by random murders to accepting them as a way of life. We are now being horrified almost every few weeks by a person killing small groups of family or strangers. And, we are becoming numb to it.

And, every few years or so we see something so shocking we cannot process it. This is what we are dealing with now. God forbid we ever accept or become numb to a society where this is the norm.

I have no answers on how to stop this madness in our country. There should be better laws for gun ownership. CT is one of the best states for gun laws and yet this happens b/c the guns are in the home and the murderer had access to them. The shooter was mentally ill. There should be better access for the mentally ill. Yet, in this case, we have no information that there was treatment for him or there wasn't. Only that there were guns available to him. I want to blame his mother, but she paid the ultimate price for having guns accessible to her son who she knew had problems. How could anyone imagine someone breaking into a school and killing the most innocent in our society?

The school was a secure site or a secure as it could be. At least 4 or 5 adults at the school died trying to stop the shooter. One sick person with one shotgun against unarmed people equals a disaster.

As a person who spent 7 years working for a school district at different schools sites and then 3 1/2 years working in the Superintendent's office all I can tell you is that the children are always our main concern. I left MUSD before Columbine ever happened. I cannot imagine what it would be like to work for a school district now.

It may come to a reality of having security at all schools or at least at the schools that can afford security. School District's have no money in this day and age for such luxuries. Who would pay for this next level of security, I don't know.

I do know this one thing, THIS incident in CT tells us that this can happen again! It is up to us to make sure it doesn't. If that means security at our schools then we must do this. One extra line of safety for our children.

We must address gun laws again and we must address the mentally ill.

We must take the steps that the experts in such matters tell us we must do to keep our children safe and from keeping, what I call "our sick" society from becoming incurable.

Elissa, I have been a HUGE supporter for public school education forever. On Friday afternoon I told Jackie, for the first time, maybe Homeschooling isn't such a bad idea.

I don't know how it went in Banning, but on Friday, after the horror in CT, our Sheriff's Dept. put units (cars w/deputies) at every school site in Carson Valley. They were even at Liam's school which is a Christian school. Every school was covered b/c you always have to worry about the copycats.

The children and teachers/staff in our country are in my prayers. It is time for more than prayers though.

    Love,
    Sherry P.
