Flu Shots

Lou and The Phi see the same doctor. This doctor highly recommended that both girls get the flu shot this season. We agreed with her and both girls got the 2 sets of shots needed for first time kids. We figured with school and work and all the other things, not having the kids get sick would be great. Well guess what? Both kids are sick. Phi missed all last week of school and had everything from fever, aches, vomiting and diarhhea. Lou has had fever, vomiting and snot like crazy. We were out of commission last week, while the kids complained and napped and I worked from home.

This morning I took The Phi to school for the first time in a week and I felt awful leaving her. Just 12 hours before she was having stomach cramps and diarrhea at a Hooters. But she had been out for a week already and she was only having cramping and diarrhea and then she would feel absolutely fine. The day before she had been perfectly okay. I walked her into her school and talked to her teacher. I told The Phi over and over again that if she felt her stomach cramping to immediately tell her teacher. They would call me and I would be right there to come and get her. As soon as her classmates saw her they all called her name, her face light up. I was so nervous for her all day. I was so worried she would have an accident or even puke in class. I was so relieved to pick her up with a smile on her face and a report from her teacher that the day went great.

Last night Joey told me I get "snippy" when the kids get sick. Like I get mad at the kids for getting sick. Really it's because when the kids are sick is the only time I feel completely helpless when it comes to my babies. I don't know what to do or how to make them better. It is the worst feeling ever. To watch your kids hurt and not know what to do to make it go away.

How do you cope when your kids are sick?

  1. Mine are older now so mostly I just make them stay in bed and rest, play quiet, read or watch movies on the portable DVD player. They really don't get all that sick very often. Mostly we just get strep throat around here so I don't end up cleaning up puke or diarreah. And they've never had the flu. Mostly I just try to get them to be as quiet as possible.
