Rejected

I need some cheering up today. A few weeks ago I was reading the local paper and rad an article about this new coffee shop/art gallery that us being built downtown. So I submitted this.....

Haven Submission from Elissa Lerma on Vimeo.

I waited and waited and got a response today....

"Unfortunately, we will not be able to display any of your photography for the opening because our space is so limited. But we will be rotating the art in and out frequently, so we'll keep you on our list for future reference. Thanks for your submission. Good luck in your endeavors, and you may hear from us again."

It was the first time I really put my stuff out there in the world. I am emotionally attached to each photo I make. I sent them out to be judged by a panel of people and they were rejected and sent back to me. And I realize that things are subjective and I am sure they had a certain thing they were looking for. But it still sucks and it still feels shitty.

Now its time to build a bridge, get over it, grab my camera and make more photos.

  1. You have to get rejected. It's part of the process. If I ever open anything, you're my first call.

Rejection sucks. No matter how many times people tell you "it's the process" it still sucks. But I admire you for putting yourself out there! (That's more than I've done so far!! Someday I will be brave enough...)

  7. For what it's worth, I really love your photography. I actually feel moved by what I see.

Also, they didn't say, "this isn't a good fit for us," but rather that there were too few spots.

You don't know if they are putting up the work of big names, of good friends or friends of good friends.

    Seriously... your photography is gorgeous.

  8. Well, sista, that is all part of the process. Don't get down, but dust yourself off and keep going. Your photography is the shiznit--you know that! Keep submitting your stuff, thats what I would do.

  9. when i had my shop i took submissions for the small gallery space i had. if any of the artist would have been half as organized about their work as you were it would have saved me a lot of time. your stuff is great and i am confident that they will call you but as icancarryallthebagsandbabies said there's a chance they really are posting friends and friends of friends right now and putting out feelers for when those run out. good luck!
