The Chicano Photographer

Last night we attended a photo exhibit opening at a local community college. The exhibit was titled "The Chicano Photographer" and is showcased photos taken by Jesus Manuel Mena Garza, who was a photographer from San Jose during the height of the Chicano Movement. It was an interesting exhibit, but a little disappointing. Many of the small selection of photos were male centered. There was a brief introduction and then the artist gave a very brief speech. He opened the floor to discussion and the school nerd in me came out and as soon as he asked if anyone had any questions I immediatley asked one. (man I am such a nerd!) We wandered and looked over the photos a few times and I even had a good 10 minute conversation with the photographer. We discussed his current photo projects (not much and not Chicano) and he basically said he was tired of not having any money and was moving away from the camera and into the corporate world. very disappointing. The Phi had a good time. She was a hit, and there was a photo student there who was snapping pictures of the exhibit and he caught The Phi laughing. People came up to us and asked about her. She went around and took some pictures. (I guess the exhibit inspired her). You can see the exhibit through The Phi's Eyes at www.phiseyes.blogspot.com.

This pic is for you Pops (haha!)

  1. Dude, see? I have been totally neglecting your blog because I SUCK and then you come and say hi and now I feel like crap.

Hit me in the head the next time I do that, ok?

Also, a question...How exactly does it feel to have the world's cutest child? Seriously, she's cuter than my 3 put together.

  5. Thanks for coming to my Chicano Photographer exhibition in San Bernardino. I have gained new insights about the exhibition after reading your contrary comments. Keep it up!

Per our conversation, I'd like to share my photos of the Navajo Nation and Oaxaca, Mexico artisans with you in the future. By the way, you should have your email posted on your blog so folks can comment. Thanks Phi (daughter) for giving the exhibit two thumbs up.
