Are We Really Parents?

Yes I know. I have been a parent for 3+ years now. Lately we have been spending time with our friends and their kids. It is still very strange to me that people our age are parents. Parents to real live kids. I also find it interesting to compare and contrast parenting styles between friends, strangers and us. There is a big range here and I wonder where people learn their parenting techniques from. We go by the live and learn, laid back, a few books, a few websites, talks with friends and our own upbringings way of learning about parenting. It is like a college course that never ends. I feel like there is a new issue that I am researching every week. I am reading and interviewing and googling a new topic, and the final exam is getting the "issue" to go away. So where do you get your parenting info from?

Over 18 years of parenting and 5 kids, my primary source is instinct. I know - it sounds too simple and it probably is but you know...I've found myself faced with "issues" here and there and whenever I talk to other parents, read a book,Google it or whatever, I find that I knew the answer all along. I don't know where it comes from though, that innate sense of what-to-do.I've always wondered how it is that people develop their own parenting style. I know the standard obvious answer is it's learned form the way you grow up but in my case, i had a HORRIBLE childhood so I know it isn't always upbringing. If anything,I've probably done the exact opposite every step of the way as far as how I was raised .

  2. I go a lot on my own gut feeling. When that fails me, I call my fiends who's children behave.

I hate to say it, but I also bought the Super Nanny book, because we were having some issues for a while there.
I ask my mom for a lot of advice.

I have taken every early childhood studies and child development class that they offered at R.C.C., but sometimes, my education fails me big time.
