Does it make me a bad Mom??


So we are getting a pretty good routine at the office. We get there at 8 and get setteled in. Then about 8:15 I feed Phi breakfast. She hangs out in her exersaucer or crawls around and gets into stuff, bugs Leslie in her office etc. By 9:30 she has a cup of milk and by 10 or 10:30 I try to get her down for a nap. It takes awhile and there is usually some whining (from me not Phi) but she will eventually sleep for awhile. As long as some rude delivery guy, or solicitor doesn't came in with their big ol' loud voice and wakes her up. This happened once and I was pissed. I just gave the guy a look and that mixed with Phi's wailing, he slowly walked back out the door. Okay back to our office routine. She will usually sleep until about 12 or 12:30 and then she is up. I feed her lunch and then its back to playing. Dada comes by for lunch about 1 or 1:30 and after he leaves and 2:30 -3 rolls around I am out of ideas of keeping Phi entertained. I have now made video time part of our daily routine. She can sit through a 1/2 hour or even 45 minute Baby Einstein or Baby Genius video. She sits quietly with her juice and cherrios and stares like a zombie at the screen (Now that I think about it she looks just like Dada when he watches TV). We have been doing this for a week or so. I have even put a bunch of kids dvds on our netflix so she has some more variety. Now the $1,000,000 question. Does this make me a bad Mom? I sometimes get this wave of guilt that I plop her down for almost an hour. Okay lets face it, it is usually an hour and let her absentmindly watch videos. I try to reassure myself by knowing that they are educational videos filled with the alphabet, animals and classical music. I also think back to all I learned from Sesame Street as a kid. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 (I know you are singing it in your head!) So many decisions to make when you are molding a young mind.

  1. i think you have little choice being that you are taking a 11 month old to work with you. i also love the baby einstiens/genius videos. kids love them! my andrew from work now amazed when people sing to him and its because he likes watching the "music videos" from those videos

    of course not--it's either a 1-hour video with mom by her side or 8 hours in daycare...i'd rather she be with you!

  3. I think they are awesome, I actually gave a set to a girlfriend for a baby shower AND SHE LOVED THEM, and so did the baby.
    As long as she enjoys them and I am not sure if you have seen the studies done with educational videos for children but it helps them with EVERYTHING!
    I think you are truly blessed to be able to bring her to work and if she looks forward to learning that can never be a bad thing.
